One room, old beams,
warm low light
We are two chefs who met in a hotel kitchen, married, and opened our own restaurant in Bakewell in 1994. Classic French cooking, served in one intimate room under old beams.

We met at the Great Fosters Hotel in Surrey, both of us chefs. From there we moved to London, where I became Chef de Partie in the sauce department at the Hyde Park Hotel at nineteen, and Christiana became Chef de Partie at the newly opened brasserie of the Park Lane Hotel. I also spent a year in the French Army as private chef to Colonel Perollaz.

To finish, we pour sweet wine by the glass alongside dessert, a Sauternes or a Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. Coffee is freshly ground and comes with chocolates, anything from a small espresso to a café latte, a liqueur coffee, or an affogato with vanilla ice cream and coffee liqueur.
Every dish on the menu comes from somewhere we have worked. It is all prepared from fresh, so it may take a little while, and we think it is worth it.

Diners come back to the classics, mussels in a deep broth, halibut in white burgundy sauce, crêpes Suzette to finish, and say the flavours are delicate and full at the same time.
The service is mentioned again and again: friendly, attentive and unhurried, with the team happy to look after vegetarians and special requests without fuss.
People choose the room for occasions that matter, wedding meals, Valentine's dinners, a first visit that will not be the last, and say the setting feels smart and intimate.
